Washington – Wyoming Congresswoman and House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) issued the following statement after Senate Democrats blocked a pair of pro-life bills from passing last night, including the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act which would allow infants who are born after an attempted abortion to receive life-saving medical care:

“Protecting innocent babies who are born alive should not be a difficult or partisan vote. It is a shame and a tragedy that Democrats will not even support this legislation that prevents infanticide.

“It is our moral obligation to stand up for the most vulnerable among us. While Democrats play politics with this issue and cater to the interests of their radical base, my colleagues and I will never stop fighting to protect the sanctity of every human life.”

Background:

In the House of Representatives, 204 members – including all House Republicans and three House Democrats – have signed a discharge petition to force a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Prior to signing the discharge petition, Congresswoman Cheney joined her fellow House Republicans at a press conference to talk about the importance of the legislation. Video of her remarks can be seen HERE.

In July of 2019, Congresswoman Cheney attempted to bring the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act to the House floor for an up-or-down vote under a unanimous consent request, but House Democrats blocked it. Video of the Congresswoman making the request can be found HERE

House Republicans have tried a total of 80 times to bring up this bill under a unanimous consent request, only to be blocked by Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats.

According to a recent poll, 77 percent of Americans support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age.
