“His Commitment To Our Men And Women In Uniform Is Surpassed By No One”
Washington, D.C. – House GOP Conference Chair and Congresswoman Liz Cheney (WY-AL) issued the following statement after Rep. Mac Thornberry (TX-13), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, announced that he would be retiring at the end of his current congressional term:
“For over 25 years, Mac Thornberry has served this nation and the people of Texas. His wise leadership, insight, and judgment are highly valued by his colleagues, and his commitment to our men and women in uniform is surpassed by no one.
“In his time on the Armed Services Committee, including as Chairman and Republican leader, Mac has been a consistent and influential advocate for a strong national defense. He has led by example during challenging times and never forgets that our highest duty is to keep this nation safe. Because of his steady and fair leadership, we were able to pass bipartisan National Defense Authorization Acts on his watch. He has also been instrumental in ensuring Congress provided necessary increases in defense spending over the past two years to begin ensuring our men and women in uniform have the resources they need to defend us all.
“I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to serve alongside him in Congress and on the Armed Services Committee. Mac has been a mentor to many of us. I have benefitted tremendously from his example, his wisdom, and his good humor, and I will miss getting his advice while standing along the rail at the back of the House Chamber. I am proud to call Mac and Sally friends. They and their two children, Mary and Will, deserve the thanks of a grateful nation for their service, and for all Mac has done to secure our freedom.”
