Washington – House GOP Conference Chair Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) raised concerns during Wednesday’s House Republican Leadership press conference about Democrats’ latest legislative proposals and rhetoric that threaten America’s security and aid our adversaries.
REP. LIZ CHENEY: Good morning everyone, thanks for joining us today. We want to talk about two issues in particular. We’re continuing to watch with significant concern what the Democrats are doing in terms of taking steps that will fundamentally weaken our nation and help our adversaries. Our Ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, Mr. Thornberry from Texas, is going speak about the NDAA in some detail in just a moment.
We just want to remind people this is the first time in close to 60 years that we’ve been facing a situation where because of what the Democrats have done, because of their refusal to recognize the importance of providing the resources we need for a range of things like low-yield nuclear weapons, missile defense for example, readiness—we have not been able to get bipartisan agreement on this legislation and it’s really tragic that that’s the situation we’re in.
I would also mention at the same time, we have had one of the other leaders of the Democratic Party in the House, Representative Ocasio-Cortez, talk about the extent to which she actually is advocating now abolishing the Department of Homeland Security, abolishing the Department. We’ve heard them talking about abolishing ICE before, but she’s now said she wants to abolish the entire Department.
We would just remind everyone, the Department of Homeland Security is comprised of approximately 22 agencies, they undertake fundamental cyber, intel operations for the nation. Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security—it is a crucial agency and a crucial set of operations that keep this nation, keep our citizens safe.
The level of just absolute irresponsibility now that we are seeing in the Democratic side among someone who clearly is one of the intellectual leaders now of the Democratic Party is really stunning and we will continue to fight as Republicans to make sure we’re doing everything we can, everything necessary to uphold our constitutional obligation to defend this nation.
