Update

Friends,

Last week, the House had the opportunity to pass a bipartisan measure that would have lowered the cost of prescription drugs for the people in Wyoming and across the country. Instead, Democrats once again decided to prioritize political games over improving the lives of the American people.

Before Speaker Pelosi tainted this measure, H.R. 987 contained three bipartisan provisions that would have lowered prescription drug costs for millions of Americans, and would have passed the House, the Senate, and become law. However, we’ve learned that this new Democratic House majority isn’t interested in passing laws. To scuttle this legislation, they added over $4 billion dollars to bailout ObamaCare, which has done nothing more than drastically increase health care costs for families in Wyoming.

Ahead of last week’s vote, House Republicans offered a motion to strip the partisan riders from this bill and direct the money towards childhood cancer research, but Democrats refused something even as common sense as that. Their insistence on promoting the fringe interests of their far-left base, instead of actually getting things done, shows how they simply can’t be trusted to govern.I also spent the past week continuing the fight against anti-Semitism, which has tragically begun to permeate the very halls of Congress.

Democrat leaders have said repeatedly they stand with Israel, in spite of the slew of anti-Semitic comments emanating from their caucus, yet not a single Dem House member signed onto a petition condemning the global boycott movement against the Jewish state.

The Republican-led anti-BDS measure would have forced Congress to vote on the condemnation of the movement after House Democrat leadership defended members of their caucus who consistently use anti-Semitic rhetoric. But instead of going on the record to show the American people where they stand—in support of the radical anti-Semitic movement or with Israel—they walked away. Speaker Pelosi is again choosing to cave to the far-left wing of her party and not bring this common sense bill that expresses our country’s support for Israel to the floor.

This is a dangerous, hateful movement that has no place in the halls of the United States Congress, or anywhere else in the world. I will continue to call on my Democrat colleagues to stand against this vile effort.

Additionally, President Trump unveiled his immigration plan, while Democrats refuse to propose any solutions to address the crisis along the southern border.

Below is a roundup of other things I’ve done over the past week to continue fighting for our state in Congress.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Liz Cheney

Natural Resources Committee

In the Natural Resources Committee, we heard testimony from Interior Secretary Bernhardt. While the Trump administration has made great strides in undoing the damage caused by the Obama administration, there is still much work to be done. I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Bernhardt to improve the management of our federal lands in Wyoming.

Armed Services Committee

The House Armed Services Committee held several briefings on the ongoing threat posed by Iran. The Iranian regime continues to support terrorism and poses a significant threat to our allies and interests in the region. President Trump was right to ensure we have the necessary forces in place to deter any Iranian attack.

Additionally, last week I joined Senators Cotton and Cornyn to introduce legislation aimed at improving the deeply flawed New START Treaty that was agreed to under the Obama administration. Today, Russia is developing delivery systems and stockpiling weapons that fall outside the scope of the agreement. Additionally, China is not a party to the New START Treaty. My bill would prevent an extension of the treaty until China joins the agreement and Russia agrees to include it’s new delivery systems and stockpile of tactical weapons within the confines of the treaty.

However, in order to achieve the changes we need to the New START Treaty, we must be negotiating from a position of strength. That means Congress must also fund the modernization of our nuclear triad, including the GBSD which will replace the aging fleet of Minuteman III missiles deployed at F.E. Warren.

Visits

Thanks to Dr. Amanda DeDiego for coming in to discuss making more mental health services available for Medicare patients in Wyoming.

Great to meet with Wyoming’s members of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors to talk about how we can make saving for retirement easier.

Wonderful to meet the Robb family from Cody who were visiting D.C.

Thanks to the Wyoming Craft Brewers Guild for coming in to discuss how we can best support their growing industry in Wyoming.

Always good to see the Wyoming realtors, who came to update me on the state of the housing industry back home.

Had a great discussion with Brian Nesvik, Director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, on grizzly bear management issues, migration corridors, and other issues affecting Wyoming’s wildlife

I also appreciated the opportunity to meet with Wyoming members of The Wilderness Society to discuss the cultural and ecological resources in the Northern Red Desert.

Finally, I had the privilege of meeting with General Lengyel, the Chief of the National Guard Burau, where we discussed the importance of the Wyoming National Guard and the need to modernize our fleet of C-130’s with the new 8-bladed props and eventually recapitalize the squadron with C-130J’s. The Wyoming Guard currently has servicemembers deployed overseas to support ongoing military operations with more scheduled to deploy soon. I thanked General Lengyel for his commitment to work with General Porter and the rest of the Wyoming Guard to ensure our men and women in uniform have the resources and training they need to support operations both at home and abroad.
